GRACIE LEWISRoanoke Rapids, NC - Mrs. Gracie Virginia Taylor Lewis, age 95, of Roanoke Rapids, NC died Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
    Mrs. Lewis was born August 25, 1914 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Romie Taylor and Sally Duke Taylor. 
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Murphy R. “Doc” Lewis.  She was a member of East Tenth Street Church of Christ.
    Survivors include her sons, T.R. Lewis and his wife Carol and Wayne Lewis all of Roanoke Rapids.  Two grandchildren, Christopher Wayne Lewis and Timothy R. Lewis and his wife Linda.  One great granddaughter, Ava Brooke Lewis.
    Funeral services will be held, Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 3:30 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.  Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.
    The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, Wednesday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

    Battleboro, NC - Pearl Pauline Brown Hales, age 53, died December 27, 2009.
    Mrs. Hales was preceded in death by her father and mother, Harold William and Della Aycock Brown and her husband William Allen Hales.
    Survivors include her sisters and brothers, Susie Mae Reese, Martha Elizabeth Watson, Debbie Ann Moss, Nannie Belle Holland, Margaret Elizabeth Barnes, Mary Frances Adams, Harold William Brown Jr. and Ernest Leroy Brown.
    Funeral services will be held, Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Massey Funeral Home in Enfield, NC with Rev. Carl Green officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
    The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home from 7:00 until 9:00 PM Wednesday.

CATHRYN FUTRELLWoodland, NC - Mrs Cathryn Boyce Futrell, age 87, of Woodland, NC died Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie, NC.
     Mrs. Futrell was born February 1, 1922 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Joseph H. Boyce and Alethia Melson Boyce.  She  was  also  preceded  in death by her husband, Daniel M. Futrell.  She  was a  retired seamstress at the Timberlake Casket Manufacturing Co. 
     Survivors include her daughter, Helen and her husband Joel Early of Ahoskie, NC.  Two grandchildren, Joel Early, Jr. and his wife Jackie of Greenville, NC and Heather E. Lane of Selma, NC.  Two great grandchildren, Daniel E Lane and Lillie Early.
     Graveside services will be held, Monday, December 28, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Woodland Cemetery in Woodland, NC with Rev. Ronald McSwain officiating.
     Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Aulander.

LINWOOD MOSELEYRoanoke Rapids, NC - Linwood Ray Moseley, age 58 of Roanoke Rapids, NC died Monday, December 21, 2009.
     Mr. Moseley was born May 23, 1951 in Halifax County, NC.  He was a member of Bears and Smiles.  He was preceded in death by his father, Everige Moseley and his step father, J.C. Norton.
     Survivors include his mother Margaret Hux Norton of Roanoke Rapids.  His sisters, Debra N. Jones of Nashville, NC and Cathy Moseley of Lawrenceville, VA.  His brothers, John M. Norton of Roanoke Rapids, Johnny E. Norton of Henrico, NC and Linwood Moseley of Lawrenceville, VA.   Also several nieces and nephews.
     Graveside services will be held, Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.
     The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, Tuesday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM

    Conway, NC - Mr. Dennis Day Joyner, age 60, of Conway, NC died December 16, 2009 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.
    Mr. Joyner was born October 19, 1949, the son of the late Joseph B. Joyner and Feline Santiago Joyner. He was employed with Georgia Pacific.
    Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth “Libby” Futrell Joyner. Two daughters, Beth Joyner of Murfreesboro, NC and Samantha Joyner of Conway, NC. His son, Steve Joyner of Conway, NC. One brother, Jose Centeno of West Palm Beach, Florida. Two grandsons, Ayden Lassiter and Quinton Lassiter. His nephew, Guierllmo Noriego of New York.
    Funeral services will be held, Sunday, December 20, 2009 at 3:00 PM at Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church with Rev. David Ross officiating. Burial will follow at Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
    Memorial contributions may be made to Woodland or Jackson Rescue Squads.
    The family will receive friends at the home.

Rich Square, NC - Mr. Claude Bernard Askew, age 88, of Rich Square, NC died Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.
     Mr. Askew was born August 20, 1921 in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late Claude A. Askew and Rebbie Futrell Askew. 
    He was also preceded in death by his wife, Fannie Warrick Askew, his brother Walter Askew and a sister, Jessie Sanderson.
    He was retired farmer and also retired from Revelle Grain Company. He was a member of Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon for many years and proudly served his country in the US Army.
     Survivors include his sons, Timothy D. Askew and his wife Marlene Parker Askew of Asheboro, NC and B.M. Askew and his wife Rhonda of Comway, NC. His sister, Marguerite Brice of Red Oak, VA. Two  grandchildren,  Stacey Askew and Charles Askew. Three great grandchildren, Melinda Askew, Mason Askew and Mallory Askew. Several nieces and nephews.
     Funeral services will be held, Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 1:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC with Rev. David Ross officiating. Burial will follow at Ashley Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

    Ahoskie, NC - Evelyn Jernigan Brantley, age 80, died Saturday, December 12, 2009.
    Mrs. Brantley was preceded in death by her parents, Carlton D. Jernigan and Ida H. Jernigan and her husband, Edward K. Brantley. She was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church.
    Survivors include her daughter, Joy B. Taylor and her husband, Ricky, of Colerain; her son, Edward K. Brantley Jr. and his wife, Caryl, of Warrenton, VA; her sister, Rachael Taylor and her husband, Ralph; two brothers, Carlton Hughes and his wife, Janet, and Carroll Jernigan and his wife, Elouise; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
    Graveside services were held Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie with the Rev. Tommy Kiker officiating.

    Wilmington, NC - Anne Alston Overton passed away Saturday, December 12 in Wilmington, NC.
    A native of Ahoskie, she was a member of First Baptist Church of Ahoskie for 70 years, where she taught Training Union Class for many years. She was a retired employee of Belk Tyler's.
    Survivors include three sons, Royce and David Overton of Mechanicsville, Va. and Dennis Overton of Wilmington, NC; and daughter-in-law, Fran Overton, formally of Ahoskie. She also is survived by seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by a son John Wayne Overton.
    A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, December 15 at 11:00 a.m. in First Baptist Church of Ahoskie. Rev. Kathy Hulin, of First Baptist Church, will be officiating. A private burial will take place in the Alston Family plot.
   
Per Mrs. Overton's request, in lieu flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the First Baptist Church of Ahoskie, Russell P. Martin Library Fund, or Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCare Center, 1406 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.

ELIZABETH WARRENLasker, NC - Mary Elizabeth “Lib” Warren, age 82, of Lasker, NC died December 9, 2009 at Rich Square Health Care Center.
     Miss Warren was born, September 15, 1927, the daughter of the late Hardy Ellis Warren and Essie Slade Warren. She was also predeceased by two brothers, William and Oliver Warren and her sister, Martha W. Lassiter. She was a retired nurse having worked at NC Memorial Hospital for over forty years.  She was a member of Lasker Baptist Church.
    Survivors include three nieces, Kathy W. Gibson and her husband Dan of Williamburg, VA, Janet W. Shimanek and her husband Les of Doylestown, PA and Becky Edmonds and her husband Lloyd of Norfolk, VA.  A sister-in-law, Ann D. Warren of Norfolk, VA and one brother-in-law, R.T. Lassiter of Lasker, NC.  One great niece, Lara Gibson of Washington, DC, two great nephews, Justin Shimanek of Doylestown, PA and Jason Young, US Navy stationed in Afghanistan.
     Funeral services will be held, Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Lasker Baptist Church with Rev. Ricky Barnes officiating.  Burial will follow at Lasker Cemetery.
     The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, Friday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

ELOISE JOYNERSeaboard, NC - Mrs. Eloise Drewett Joyner passed away on Friday, November 13, 2009.A lifetime resident of Seaboard, NC, she attended Seaboard Baptist Church where she sang in the choir.
     Mrs. Joyner was born December 3, 1926, the daughter of the late Walter Jackson Drewett and Mary Johnson Drewett and was raised in Northampton County.
     She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Jasper William Joyner and her two daughters, Anne Beale and her husband Mack of Greenville, NC and Nancy Wade and her husband Ronnie of Dunn, NC; three
grandchildren Dean Wade and his wife Jill of Dunn, NC, Megan Beale Wamer and her husband Timmy of Winterville, NC, and James Beale and his wife Mandria of Greenville, NC; five great grandchildren, Kealey and Ashtyn Wade, Joel and Conner Wamer and Isabella Beale.  She is also survived by her sisters, Christine Whitehead of Emporia, VA and Ellen Whitley of Potecasi, NC.
     Funeral services will be held, Monday, November 16, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Seaboard Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Gaskins, Rev. Steve Trussell and Rev. Joshua Blythe.  Burial will follow at Seaboard Cemetery.

    Enfield, NC - Mr. Benjamin “Benny” Hudgins, age 85 of Enfield, NC died Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at his home.
    Mr. Hudgins was born August 10, 1924, the son of the late Arthur Hudgins and Clara Smith Hudgins. He was a mechanic for many years and a dispatcher for the Enfield Police Department. He loved to farm and was a farmer for many years. He was a veteran of the US Air Force.
    Survivors include his wife, Nellie Jones Hudgins. His daughters, Donna Sue Hudgins and Bonnie Inscoe. His granddaughter, Jennifer Velasquez. Two sisters, Mary Keeter and Nellie Armstrong.
    Funeral services will be held Friday, November 6, 2009 at 2:00 Pm at Massey Funeral Home in Enfield, NC with Rev. Charles Robl III officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.

JACK ROUGHTON SR.Roanoke Rapids, NC  Mr. Jack Lester Roughton Sr., age 80, of  Scotland Neck, NC died Sunday, November 1, 2009.
     Mr. Roughton was born December 20, 1928.  He was predeceased in death by his parents, Zack and Annie Nixon Roughton.
     Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Jack L. Roughton Jr. and his wife Mary of Raleigh, NC,  a daughter, Rebecca R. Abernathy and her husband Donald  of  Roanoke Rapids.  One grandson Lee Brown Jr. and two step granddaughters Betsy Desprez and Ginger Desprez. 
     Mr. Roughton was a member of the Lakeview Park Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids. He retired Sgt. First Class from the U S Army after 27 years of service.
     The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids on Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 pm. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 4 at 3:00 pm at Massey Funeral Home Chapel and interment will follow at Cedar wood Cemetery. 
    Services will be conducted by Rev. Arnold Cooper.

MYRTLE KEETEREnfield, NC - Mrs. Myrtle Walker Keeter, age 95, of Enfield, NC died Sunday, November 1, 2009.
     Mrs. Keeter was born December 1, 1913.  She obtained her education through the public schools in Halifax County. Myrtle was married to the late John Raymond Keeter who she loved and was faithful to until the day she went to be with the Lord.  She was predeceased by her parents, C.B. and Rosa Walker Keeter, a son, Raymond Eugene Keeter and all of her brothers and sisters.
     Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Wayne Arnold Keeter and his wife Margaret of Roanoke Rapids, Kaye K. Neville and her husband Andrew of Enfield, Vivian K. Edmondson and her husband Gene “Peter Rabbit” of Roanoke Rapids.  Her daughter-in-law,
Faye S. Keeter of Raleigh.  Eight grandchildren, Lynn James (Danny), Timothy “Snapper” Keeter (Michelle), Wayne A Keeter II (Sandra), Katrina Ross West,  Lisa Whitby (Kenny), John Harrison and Michelle Ross, Mark Alan Edmondson and Gene Gray Edmondson Jr.  Fourteen grandchildren, Christie Ayscue (Andru), Willie D. James II, Wayne A Keeter III (Amber), Jennifer Keeter, Tabitha Keeter, Drew Keeter, Donna Keeter, J.R. West, Holt Gordon, Hannah, Nathan and Lillie Ross, Dylan Edmondson and Landen Edmondson.  Three great grandchildren, Andru Dylan Ayscue, Destiny “Ducky” Ayscue, Krysia “Queen B” Ayscue and several nieces and nephews.
     Myrtle was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, mother-in-law and a true friend to all who knew her.  She also left to cherish her memory, Rev. Marshall Walker, a devoted nephew, Donna Garner Crickmore, a dedicated niece, Joseph Ross, Willie Gordon and many other relatives and friends.
     A memorial service, followed by visitation, will be held, Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at 7:00 Pm at Massey Funeral Home in Enfield, NC.
    A graveside service will be held, Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield.

    Jackson, NC - Mrs. Vivian Cone Vaughan, age 72, of Jackson, NC died Monday, October 26, 2009 at Pine Forest Rest Home in Potecasi.
    Mrs. Vaughan was born July 24, 1937 in Franklin County, NC. She was predeceased by her husband Cecil Vaughan and a son, Cecil Vaughan Jr. who passed away March 3, 2008.
    Mrs. Vaughan is survived by a son, Ronald Vaughan of Jackson, NC; three sisters, Edith Lassiter of Rich Square, Carol Vaughan of Windsor, NC and Pansy Sonja of Louisburg, NC; and a brother, Jimmy Cone of Pilot, NC.
    Cecil Jr. is survived by his son, Justin Andrew Vaughan and a brother, Ronald Vaughan of Jackson.
    A joint funeral service will be held for Mrs. Vaughan and her son Cecil Jr. on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson with the Rev. Ed Drew officiating. Burial will follow at Jackson Cemetery.
    The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, Wednesday from 7-8:30 p.m.

    Rocky Mount, NC - Mrs. Allene Aycock Lucas Hux, age 77 of Rocky Mount, NC and formerly of Enfield, NC died Saturday, October 24, 2009 at Nash General Hospital.
    Mrs. Hux was retired from CSX Railroad and a retired insurance agent in Enfield for many years. She worked with Charlotte Liberty Mutual and Western and Southern Insurance Companies.
    Mrs. Hux was pre-ceded in death by her first husband, Tommie Horace Lucas and her second husband Willie Alexander Hux.
    Survivors include her children, Ann Joyner of Rocky Mount, Faye Reason Soth of Maryland and Johnnie Ray Lucas of Roanoke Rapids. Seven brothers and sisters, Jack Aycock, Dan Aycock, David Aycock, Tommy Aycock, Emily Bass, Jane Dennis and Suzanne Bunish. Seven grandchildren, Denise Rodenkirchen, ginger Joyner, Elizabeth Joyner, Timothy Joyner, Alex Reason, Johnathan Vance Lucas, Melissa Nager and eleven great grandchildren Klaus Rodenkirchen, Patience Rodenkirchen, Raynor Rodenkirchen, Leighann Kennedy, Kelsey Warrick, Chelsea Reason, Shyann Reason, Ashley McCoy, Ashwin Nager, Vajay Nager and Sanjay Nager.
    A memorial service will be held, Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 7:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Enfield, NC. The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.
    Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Research and Treatment.

JOHN HENRY TODDColerain, NC - Mr. John Henry Todd, age 65, of Colerain, NC died October 19, 2009 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC.
     Mr. Todd was born April 20, 1944 in Bertie County, NC, the son of the late John Davis Todd and Eva Mizelle Todd.  He was a veteran of the US Army having served his country during the Vietnam War.Survivors include his daughter, Lisa Todd Liverman of Ahoskie and Wendy Todd Ambrose of Harrellsville. His sons, David S. Todd of Colerain and Jay Todd of Harrellsville. Five grandchildren. His wife, Margaret and three step grandchildren.
     Graveside services will be held Thursday, October 22, 2009 at Harrellsville Cemetery in Harrellsville with Rev. Preston Jernigan and Rev. David Baker officiating.
     The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, Wednesday from 7:00 until 8:00 PM.

    Mufreesboro, NC - Mr. Ellis Ray Brown, age 68, of Murfreesboro, NC died Friday, October 16, 2009 at his home.
    Mr. Brown was born March 14, 1941 the son of the late Rexell Lee Brown and Roxie Mae Lane Brown. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jeri Jackson Brown.
    Survivors include his daughters, Lana Flythe and her husband, Robert, Connie Jenkins and her husband, Keith, Bonnie Jenkins and her husband, Marty, and Janie Brown; four grandchildren, Ray Jenkins, Ryan Flythe, Lauren Flythe and Christopher Miles; and three brothers, Samuel Brown, Linday Brown and Wayne Brown.
    Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, October 19, 2009 at Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie, NC.
    The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, Sunday, Oct. 18 from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. and other times at the home.

Weldon, NC - Mrs. Dorothy Webb Pittman, age 83, of Weldon, NC died Monday, October 12, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center. 
     Mrs. Pittman was born September 2, 1923 in Pinetops, NC, the daughter of the late Walter Webb and Jerusha Kennedy Webb. She was also predeceased by her husband Horace Martin Pittman.
     Survivors include her daughter, Janie Medlin of Roanoke Rapids.  Her son, Duke Pittman of Halifax.  Two sisters, Carolyn Pittman of Efland, NC and Faye Gardner of Halifax, NC.  Her brother, Pete Webb of Efland, NC.  Three grandchildren, Stephanie Amos and her husband Curt, Shelly Strickland and her husband Michael and Justin Medlin.  Four great grandchildren, Payton Amos, Harli Amos, Jordan Strickland, and Ayden Medlin.
     Graveside services will be held, Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Whitakers Chapel Cemetery in Whitakers, NC with Rev. Chuck Owens officiating.
     The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Enfield, NC Thursday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM prior to services.

CECIL CALVIN WILLOUGHBYRoanoke Rapids, NC - Mr. Cecil Calvin Willoughby, age 85, of Roanoke Rapids, NC died Friday, October 9, 2009 in Lawrenceville, VA.
     Mr. Willoughby was born December 13, 1923, in Hertford County, NC, the son of the late Walter Raleigh Willoughby and Laura Hughson Willoughby. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Jenkins Willoughby. 
     Mr. Willoughby was a registered State Forrester  and retired from Coastal Lumber Company.  He was a World War II Army veteran, a member of Potecasi Baptist Church and former member of Valley Pine Country Club where he loved to play golf.
     Survivors include his daughter Beth W. Story and her husband Tommy of Littleton, NC.  His grandchildren, Renee Vester, Stephanie Pericak, and Hunter Thomas Story.  Three great grandchildren, Justin, Tyler and Margaret.  A sister, Margaret Young of Ahoskie, NC.
     Graveside services will be held, Sunday, October 11, 2009 at 4:00 Pm at Milwaukee Cemetery with Rev. Joe McLean officiating.

    Rosobel, NC - Lucille Brown Johnson, age 96, of Roxobel, NC died Thursday, October 8, 2009.
    Mrs. Johnson was born June 7, 1913 in Hertford County, NC, the daughter of the late Fleetwood Brown and Meta Perry Brown. She was also predeceased by her husband, Jesse Johnson. She was a member of Sandy Run Baptist Church.
    Survivors include her sons, Jesse B. Johnson and Gary Johnson, both of Roxobel, NC; two sisters, Hazel Johnson of Roxobel and Dora Mae Harrell of Portsmouth, VA; and two grandchildren, Paul Johnson and Laura Joyner.
    Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery with Rev. Roger Johnson officiating.
    Prior to the service, the family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson on Saturday from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m.

Roanoke Rapids, NC- Miss Calvia Mae Clary, age 88, of Roanoke Rapids, NC died Oct. 1, 2009 at Rich Square Health Care Center in Rich Square, NC.
     Miss Clary was born October 20, 1920 in Roanoke Rapids, NC, the daughter of the late Louis Brandford Clary and Sallie Louise Taylor Clary.
    She was also predeceased by her brothers, Edwin L. Clary and Parrish Mitchell Clary and a sister, Marcella C. Jackson.  She worked for many years at J.P. Stevens and Company and was a member of First Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids.
     Survivors include her sisters, Doma C. Cooper of Roanoke Rapids, Mary Ann Hinson of Rocky Mount, NC and Sylvia Davis of Sandston, VA. A very special nephew, Andy Jackson and his wife Brenda of Roanoke Rapids and many special nieces and nephews.
     Funeral services will be held, Saturday, October 3, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC with Dr. Julian Millsofficiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

Seaboard, NC - Mr. Carl C. Price, age 79, of Seaboard, NC passed awa September 29, 2009 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.
    Mr. Price was born February 9, 1930, the son of the late J.W. and Beatrice Price.  He was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.
    Survivors include his wife, Winnie W. Price.  Two daughters, Lena Price and Carla P. Stephenson and her husband Joey.  His granddaughter, Carly Stephenson.  His sister, Mary Price Barrett.  Also many nieces and nephews. 
    Graveside services will be held, Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church cemetery with Rev. Robert Hill officiating.
    The family will receive friends following the service at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

Pendleton, NC - Mrs. Mildred C. Parker, age 89, of Pendleton, NC died Saturday, September 26, 2009 at her home.
    Funeral services will be held, Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Severn Baptist Church in Severn, NC with Rev. Brent Hobbs and Rev. Tim Hogan officiating.  Burial will follow at Severn Cemetery.

NICK PARKERMurfreesboro, NC - Mr. Nicholas “Nick” Dane Parker, age 55, of  Murfreesboro, NC, died Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at his home.
     Mr. Parker was born, May 26, 1954, in Portsmouth, VA, the son of Loyd Alston Parker and the late Lila Brown Parker.  In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd Wayne Parker.
    Nick was a master carpenter and worked in the construction business until his health failed him.
    Survivors include his father, Loyd A. Parker of Murfreesboro, NC.  A brother, Timothy James Parker and his wife Lynn Warren Parker of Franklin, VA.; his sisters, Wanda Parker Vinson and her husband W.C. of Murfreesboro, NC and Marlene Loraine Parker and her husband Tim Askew of Asheboro, NC.  Also five nephews. 
    Funeral services will be held, Friday, September 25, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Mount Tabor Baptist Church with Rev. Wint Hale officiating.  Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
    The family will receive friends after the service at the home.

Katherine Kirkland
Pendleton, NC - Mrs. Katherine Kee Kirkland, age 88, died September, 16, 2009 at Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin, VA.

    Mrs. Kirkland was born, August 28, 1921 in Northampton County, NC.  She was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence Irvin “Jake” Kirkland, a son, Thurlow Kirkland and a grandson, Ryan Kirkland.  She was a member of Galatia Baptist Church.
    Survivors include her son, Joseph H. Kirkland and his wife Sarah of Margarettsville, NC.  A sister, Ella Jean Overby of Branchville, VA.  A daughter-in-law, Sandy Kirkland of Sedley, VA and her granddaughter, Kirby.
    Funeral services will be held, Saturday, September 19, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Galatia Baptist Church with Rev. David Foster officiating.  Burial will follow at Conway Cemetery.

GRACE DAVISSeaboard, NC - Mrs. Grace Harrison Davis, age 87, of Seaboard, NC died Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
     Mrs. Davis was born, March 2, 1922, the daughter of the late Alvah Reid Harrison and Maude Justice Harrison.  She was also preceded in death by her husband William Godwin Davis.  She was a member of Galatia Baptist Church.
     Survivors include her children, Ronald Harrison and his wife Judy of Garysburg; Linda Luckert and her husband Glenn of Arlington, TX; William Davis and his wife Wanda of Conway; David Davis and his wife Pam of Seaboard; Ann White and her husband James of Murfreesboro, NC; Shirley Aston of Conway, NC; Jerry Davis of Seaboard, NC; Danny Davis of Murfreesboro, NC; and Terry Davis of Smithfield, VA.  Her brothers, Paul Harrison and Alvah “Dink” Harrison, both of Roanoke Rapids, NC.  Fourteen Grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
     A graveside service will be held, Friday, September 18, 2009 at 2:00 PM at the Davis Family Cemetery with Rev. David Foster officiating.

    Woodland, NC - Deborah Swain Joyner, 48, of Woodland died Monday, September 14, 2009.
Survivors include her husband, Linwood Joyner; a son, Danny Taylor of St. Johns; her parents, L.B. Swain of Windsor and Mary Lou Belangia of Harrellsville; and a brother, Tommy Swain of Ahoskie.
    Graveside services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Rich Square, with the Rev. J.N. Worsley officiating.

    Conway, NC - Herbert William Cook, 67, of Conway died Sunday, September 13, 2009 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
    A native of Southampton County, Va., he was a building contractor and carpenter.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Cornett Cook; children, Lisa Diane Cook Baines of Suffolk, VA, Sam William Cook Jr. and Timmy Earl Cook, both of Ivor, VA, Betty Sue Cook of Garysburg and Joanie Cook Draper of Seaboard; sisters, Martha Ann Ericcson and Mandy Likens, both of Smithfield, VA; brothers, Jimmy Cook of Wakefield, VA and Johnny Cook of Windsor, VA; and eight grandchildren.
    A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at Faison’s Assembly of God Church, Conway, with the Rev. R.O. Denton officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

JEAN HOGGARD STACYMurfreesboro, NC - Jean Hoggard Stacy, age 52, of Murfreesboro, NC died Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at her home.
     Mrs. Stacy was born May 25, 1957.  She was a LPN and received her nursing degree at Roanoke-Chowan Community College.  She was preceded in death  by her father, Marvin Hoggard.
     Survivors include her husband Curtis Harold Stacy, Jr., two daughters, Amber Stacy of Aulander, NC and Melissa Stacy of Murfreesboro and Wilmington, NC, her mother Lucille Martin Hoggard of Woodland, her sister, Brenda H. Lassiter and her husband Ed of Woodland, and a brother, Buddy Hoggard and his wife Joann of  Roanoke Rapids.

SHIRLEY GRIZZARDAhoskie, NC - Mrs. Shirley Byrum Grizzard, age 70, of US Hwy 158, Ahoskie, NC died Monday, September 7, 2009 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC.
    Mrs. Grizzard was a native of Bertie county and a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church. She was a retired beautician and homemaker. A lady of many talents, Shirley was dearly loved and will be missed by many.
    Preceded in death by her father, George Byrum, mother Maggie Byrum, infant daughter, Donna Grizzard and a sister, Jeanette Vandiford.
    She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Robert T. Grizzard, two daughters Rhonda Askew and her husband Butch, Lori “Sissy” Harrell and husband Dale, two grandchildren Lee smith and Tricia Bryant and her fiancé Steve Eure, one great grandchild Breanna, sisters Lennie Williams, Peggy White and hsuband Earl and her stepmother, Berna Dean Byrum. Ten nephews, five nieces, many great nieces and nephews and four step-sisters, Kay Harrell, Diane Revelle, Deborah Futrell and Elaine Johnson.
    Funeral services will be held, Thursday, September 10, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Mount Tabor Baptist Church with Rev. Wint Hale officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Murfreesboro, NC.

ESTELLE DICKENSWeldon, NC - Mrs. Estelle Pittman Dickens, age 89,  of Weldon, NC died Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
     Mrs. Dickens was born January 29, 1920, the daughter of the late John C. Pittman Sr. and Alice Staton Pittman Flemming. She was also preceded in death by her husband Ira Glenn “Dick” Dickens.
     Mrs. Dickens, along with her husband was owner of the Slipper Shop in Roanoke Rapids and owned and Antique Shop in Halifax for a number of years. She was a member of Weldon Baptist Church. She was very devoted to her family and a friend to everyone she ever met.
     Survivors include her daughter, Connie P. Turner of Littleton, NC.  Her sister, Virginia Shell.  Her brothers, James A. “Jimmy” Pittman, Gene Pittman, and Johnny Pittman. Her grandchildren, Fran Bailey and Quint Turner and her great grandchildren, Mia Bailey, Emmie Bailey and Joseph Davis Turner.  Also many nieces and nephews.

Seaboard, NC - Mrs. Annie Taylor Bass, age 87, of Seaboard, NC died Thursday, August 27, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
     Mrs. Bass was born June 8, 1922 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Dempsey Turner Taylor and Jennie Stephenson Taylor.  She was also preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Ellis Taylor, Lydia T. Capel, Virginia T. Stephenson, Betty T. Manning, John Taylor, Helen T. Kagels, Dempsey Taylor, Mary T. Mumford and North Taylor.
     She was an active member of  Seaboard United Methodist Church where she had served as organist and pianist for over fifty years. 
     Survivors include her husband, Russell Lee Bass.  Her children, David Bass and his wife Patti of Franklin, VA; Gary Bass and his wife Gail of Chester, VA; Robert Bass and his wife Lynda of Herndon, VA; and Jennifer Bass Bolton and her husband Pat of Wilmington, NC;
seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

JESSE "BUDDY"  LOVE JR.Pleasant Hill, NC- Mr. Jesse Frank “Buddy” Love Jr., age 64, of Drewett Store Road, Pleasant Hill, NC died August 27, 2009 at Guardian Care in Roanoke Rapids.
     Buddy was born July 7, 1945 in Halifax County, NC, the son of the late Jesse Frank Love Sr. and Rachel Cooley Love.  He was a retired carpenter and loved music and playing the guitar.
     Survivors include his wife, Nancy Boone Love.  His sons, Charles Love of Clayton, NC and Doug Love and his wife Pamela of Roanoke Rapids, NC.   His step-son, John Rook of Pleasant Hill, NC. His granddaughter, Brittany Love.  Three nieces, Mary Love,  Denise Beam, Gail Smith and his special little dog companion, “Little E.”
     Funeral services will be held Monday, August 31, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Barbara Lewis officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mr. Wallace Reeves Joyner, Sr., age 85 of Roanoke Rapids died August 25, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
     Mr. Joyner was born January 23, 1924 in Halifax County, NC, the son of the late Alfred Edward Joyner and
Gertrude Barnes Joyner.  He was also predeceased by his wife, Eliza Jane Gray Joyner.  He was retired from
Champion Paper Company and was a member of the Twin City Rifle Club.
     Survivors include his children, Linda Joyner Frey and her husband Sewell of Oxford, Maryland, Vickie Joyner Siefferman and her husband Richard of Petersburg, VA and Wallace R. Joyner Jr. and his wife Sandra of Roanoke Rapids.  His grandchildren, Hannah Katlin Joyner, Emily Nicole Joyner, Adam Reeves Siefferman and Sewell Frey Jr.  A sister, Mildred Joyner Schmitt of Virginia Beach, VA.

LEONA CARPENTERPleasant Hill, NC - Mrs. Leona White Carpenter, age 80, was called to rest on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 surrounded by her family and loving caregivers at Carolina Rest Home in Roanoke Rapids.
     Leona was born September 2, 1928 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Ernest White and Ruth Edwards White. She was also preceded in death by her husband John L. Carpenter Sr., a son, Donnie Ray Carpenter, a brother Fleetwood  White and two sisters, Evelyn Braswell and Natalie White.
     Leona was co-owner of Big John’s Store, Pleasant Hill, NC from 1968 until failing health.  She attended Halifax Community College and received her LPN degree and was a farmer’s wife for many years.
     She is survived by a son, John L. Carpenter Jr. and his wife Ginny of Gaston, NC; her daughters, Pam Grant and Debbie Lassiter and her husband Bobby, all of Lasker, NC. Her sisters, Reba W. Mayle of Pleasant Hill, NC, Barbara Ann Kroner of Stafford, VA and Edith Crater of Terrance, California.  A brother, Rudolph White of Virginia Beach, VA.  Seven grandchildren,  John L. “Johnny” Carpenter III, Melissa Carpenter Montoya, Yvonne Cook, Kristy Hollingsworth, Donny Lassiter, Adam Lassiter and Mark Lassiter.  Eleven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

ELLA MAE VINSONWinton, NC - Ms. Ella Mae Hall Vinson, age 87, of Winton, NC died Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.
    Ms. Vinson was born Dec. 23, 1921, the daughter of the late William Andrew Hall and Lula Mae Liverman Hall. She was a member of Winton Baptist Church.
    Survivors include her children, Elliott Lee Vinson Jr. of Sunfield, Mich., Robert Eugene Vinson and his wife Kay of Winton, Gloria Jean Vinson Thum and Linda Marie Vinson Jernigan and her husband Steve, all of Murfreesboro and Rebecca Irene Vinson Davidson and her husband Joey of Colerain. 12 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren.

ALVINE FUTRELLPotecasi, NC - Mr. Alvin Wingate Futrell, age 87, of Potecasi, NC died Tuesday, August 18, 2009.
    Mr. Futrell was born September 6, 1921 in Conway, NC, the son of the late Jordan Futrell and Betty Joyner Futrell.  He was preceded in death by his wife Jimmie Knight Futrell and a sister, Louise Warrick.  He was employed for many years with E.B. Lassiter Lumber Company and then worked at Northampton Peanut Company.  He was a member of Potecasi Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon.
    Survivors include his daughter, Patricia Willoughby and her husband Alton of Woodand, NC and Pam Cullins and her husband Keith of Como, NC.  Two grandsons, Adam Willoughby and his wife Christine of Nicholasville, Kentucky and William Outland Jr. and his wife Cheryl of Seaboard, NC.  His brother, Clyde Futrell of Milwaukee, NC and a sister, Margaret Johnson of Murfreesboro, NC.  Two step grandchildren, four great grandchildren, nine step great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

JAMES MELVIN GREGORYRoanoke Rapids, NC - Mr. James Melvin “Dukie” Gregory, age 62, of Roanoke Rapids died Friday, August 14, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family.
     Mr. Gregory was born September 3, 1946 in Northampton County, NC.  He was pre-deceased by his mother, Frances Inez Gregory and a brother, James “Jimmy” Leon Gregory. He was a Veteran of the US Army and served his country proudly during the Vietnam War.
     Survivors include his wife, Marie Faithful Gregory.  His children, Casey Gregory of Red Oak, NC, Samantha Gregory and John Gregory, both of Roanoke Rapids.  His father, James Gregory of Roanoke Rapids.  His sisters, Sue Brooks and Lola Cornwell, both of Conway, NC.  His brothers, Pastor Donald Gregory, Randy Gregory and Gene Gregory, all of Roanoke Rapids and Terry Gregory of Conway, NC.  Four grandchildren, Matthew Scott, Devin Tyler, Jamelyn Denise and Shameron Gale.  Also his beloved Chihuahua, “Tootsie Roll”, his very best friend.

Gaston, NC - Mr. Jasper Turner Jr. age 51, of Gaston, NC died Friday August 9, 2009 at Duke Hospital in Durham, NC. 
     Mr. Turner was born October 25, 1957 in Roanoke Rapids, NC. He was preceded in death by his father, Jasper Turner Sr. and a sister, Brenda Leggett.  
     Survivors include his wife, Lillian “Re Re” Shaw Turner.  His daughter, Glenda Turner of Roanoke Rapids , a son, Stacy McLeod of Gaston.  Two step children, Amy Gonzales and Jason McLeod , both or Roanoke Rapids.  Eight grandchildren.  His mother, Lillie Mae Price Turner of Gaston.  His sisters, Linda Acree, Vickie Turner and her fiancée Mike Allen, all of Gaston and Cindy McCorkle and her husband Mack McCorkle Jr. of Cary.  His brother, Michael Turner and his wife Wendy of Gaston, NC.  His aunt, Rose Turner Edwards.  His uncles, Bill Turner and his wife Rachel, Reuben Turner and Leslie Turner and his wife Judy.  A very special friend, T.C. Connor.

Charlotte, NC - Edmund Charles Zusin passed away at home, August 5, 2009.
     Ed grew up in East Orange, NJ and earned an electrical engineering degree from Newark College of Engineering and a MBA from Duke University.  He was employed for 33 years with IBM working in new product development , systems design and programming and enjoyed seeing the progression of large mainframe computers evolve into small personal computers.  His IBM career took him to many parts of the world for business and pleasure.  His family and friends, traveling and classical music were his passions.
     He leaves behind the love of his life, Betty Lou Hill Zusin, his wife of 28 years.  Two surviving sons, Edmund Charles Zusin Jr. and David Bradley Zusin, both of whom have grown into fine men.  A lovely granddaughter, Sommer Ann Zusin.  His faithful canine companion, Mike, who remained at Ed’s bedside throughout his illness.  His daughter, Audrey Marie Bishop pre-deceased him in death.
     A memorial graveside service will be held Friday, August 14, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, Jackson, NC with Rev. Robert Hill officiating.

RAYMOND TURNER JR.Jackson, NC - Mr. Raymond G. Turner, Jr., age 57, of US Hwy 158, Jackson, NC died Sunday, August 2, 2009 at his home.
     Mr. Turner was born December 7, 1951 in Roanoke Rapids, NC.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Henry and Mary Turner , Johnny and Sally Johnson, a brother, John Thomas Turner and a uncle, Leon Turner.
     He was owner of Turner’s Garage and Wrecker Service, near Jackson since 1973.  He was past President and past board member of the Independent Garage Owners Association.  He was past President of the Jackson Lions Club where he had served for eight years.  Raymond was a strong believer in God, donated to many organizations and charities and the type of man who would help anyone, not expecting anything in return.
     Survivors include his wife of thirty years, Johnnie Hale Turner.  His father and mother, Raymond G. Turner Sr. and Clara Bell Johnson Turner of Jackson.  His brother, Jack Turner of Newsomes, VA.  His son, Raymond Grays Turner III and his wife Michelle of Gaston, NC.  His daughters, Tonya S. Garner and her husband Rocky and Tammy A. Vick, all of Louisburg, NC.  His grandchildren, Amanda Turner, Raymond G. “Ray” Turner IV, Ashley Park, Brian Vick, Nicholas Garner, and Eric Goodrich. Special nephews, J.T. Turner and Lucas Turner and a special niece Shelby Barry.  Four adopted brothers, Ernest Turner, Nelson Poole, Stuart Harrell and Dickie Smith.  A sister-in-law, PatriciaTaylor and her husband Billy and a brother-in-law, George Hale and his wife Elaine.  Also many other relatives and friends that were special to him.

    Conway, NC - Mildred Gregory Cook, 85, of Conway, died Saturday, July 25, 2009 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.
    Survivors include a daughter, Janie Marie Barmer; a brother, James Gregory of Roanoke Rapids; two half sisters, Crethy Bracy of Rocky Mount and Bertha Bracy of Roxobel; a half brother, W.D. Edwards of Seaboard; and a grandson.

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mrs. Patricia Agnor “Patsy” Lassiter, age 63, of Roanoke Rapids died Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
     Mrs. Lassiter was born April 12, 1946. She was a member of Smith United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids.
     Survivors include her husband Robert Lassiter.  Her son, Ronald Wayne Josey and his wife Kim of Kill Devil Hills and her daughter, Melissa Joann Parker and her husband Roger of Manteo, NC. Her mother, Ann Agnor of Chesapeake, Va.  Her brother, Ronnie Agnor also of Chesapeake, VA.  Three grandchildren Ashley Hatcher, Katherine Dawn Westcott and Alex Josey. One great grandchild Kathlenna Graicee Broggi and one step grandchild Taylor Dale Parker.

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mr. Clyde C. “William” Spence Sr. age 82, of Roanoke Rapids died Friday, July 3, 2009 at his home.
     Mr. Spence was born March 13, 1927 in Halifax County, NC the son fo the late John E. Spence and Fannie Daughtry Spence.  He was also predeceased by a son, David Lee Spence.  He was a World War II Navy veteran and a member of First Christian Church in Roanoke Rapids.
     Survivors include his wife, Joann Walker Spence.  His sons, Clyde Spence Jr. and his wife Karen of Halifax, NC, Randy Spence and his wife Lavetta  Faye of Littleton, NC and Ronnie Spence and his wife Renee of Roanoke Rapids.  His sister, Ruth Spence Muthig of Laurel, Maryland.  Seven grandchildren, Michelle Hale, Susan Spence, Robin Spence, Kimberly Pinna, Timothy Spence, Randall Spence and Riley Spence.  Five great grandchildren, Phillip Aycock, Jennifer Hale, McKenzie Spence, Kaitlyn Pinna and Jacob Spence.

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mr. Suiter Ransome Stokes, age 84 passed away, Monday, June 29, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
     Mr. Stokes was born May 3, 1925 in Halifax County, NC.  He retired from J.P. Stevens and Company.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Polly Carroll Stokes, his second wife, Bertha Vinson Stokes and his third wife, Lucille Beam Stokes.  He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
    Survivors include his daughter, Sarah Stokes Rose and her husband Lester of Roanoke Rapids. His step-daughter, Joyce Parrish of Halifax, NC. His grandchildren, Glenda Michelle Tanner, Lester Ray Rose and Leston Erwin Parker.  His great grandchildren, Ryan Tanner, Justin Hess and Angela Rose. Many step grandchildren including Olya Green and Thomas Green. His step children Gladys Wall, John Vinson, Eunice Widener, Dorothy Bryant, Linda V. Coker, Gail Jones, Rachel Johnson, David G. Beam Sr., and Ruth Kay Beam. Many step great grandchildren, including Calvin Green, Joshua Green and Lindsey Green. A special niece, Seretha “Princess” Powell,  Lisa Clippard, and nephew Louis Vinson.

Garysburg, NC - Mr. John Bennett Stephenson age 83, of Garysburg died Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
     Mr. Stephenson was born May 19, 1926 in Northampton county, NC, the son of the late Turner Taylor Stephenson and Virginia Taylor Stephenson.  
     Mr. Stephenson graduated from Seaboard High School, attended Augusta Military Academy in Staton, VA and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He served in the US Army during World War II.  He was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church and a farmer.
     Survivors include his sisters, Virginia S. Wilkinson of Tarboro, NC, Mildred S. Edwards of Garysburg, NC, and Linda S. Turner of Weldon, NC.  Several nieces and nephews and a very special friend, Barbara Cocke of Jackson.
     Graveside services will be held, Monday, June 29, 2009 at 11:00 AM at the Stephenson Family Cemetery at the home.

    Ernest Linwood Lawrence, 79, of Murfreesboro died Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.He was an Army veteran.

Jackson, NC - Mrs. Kathryn Boyd Rokita Hamill, age 86, of Jackson, NC died Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC.
     Mrs. Hamill was born June 22, 1922, the daughter of the late Raymond R. Boyd and Beulah Lassiter Boyd.  She was also predeceased by her first husband Joseph Rokita and her second husband Archie Hamill.  She graduated from Jackson High School, East Carolina Teachers College and the Medical College of Virginia. She lived and worked in New York City for nearly fifty years.  After her retirement she returned to her home town of Jackson and became an active member of The Church of the Saviour and the Jackson Woman’s Club.
     Survivors include her daughters, Diane Rokita Pridgen and her husband Charles of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Kathie Rokita and her husband Brian Doherty of Long Island, New York.  Her sister, Nancy B. Skipper of Jackson, NC.  Her grandchildren, Margie Martin and April Pridgen.  Her great grandchildren, Katie, Will and Grace Martin and David and Laura Pridgen.  Her nieces and nephews, Mary Ann “Sisty” Heaslip, Joey Davis, Jennie Wade, Jill Helm, Jimmy Davis and Jeff Davis.

     Taylor was born September 20, 1997 in Roanoke Rapids, NC. She had just finished the fifth grade at Belmont Elementary School in Roanoke Rapids.  One of her greatest things she loved to do was play soccer.
     She is survived by her parents Lisa and Curtis Norwood of Roanoke Rapids and William Vaughan, of Skippers, VA.  Her brothers, Tyler Vaughan and Jared Norwood of the home.  Her grandparents, Bud and Georgia Erickson and Ruth and Henry Spence.  Her aunt, Lori Erickson and her uncles, Tim Erickson and his wife Susan and Jason Vaughan and his wife Katrina.

     Mr. Johnson was born May 31, 1921, the son of the late Joseph Johnson and Lillie Vaughan Johnson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Baird Johnson.
     An Avid Atlanta Braves Fan and an avid listener to Rev. Arnold Cooper on Sunday morning radio program. (Possum).  His favorite vacation spots were the .25 slot machine in Atlantic City and Dover Downs.
     Survivors include his daughter, Barbara J. Carter and her husband Jim of Roanoke Rapids. His sister, Barbara Andrews of Richmond, VA.  His brother, Stanley Johnson and his wife Peggy of Littleton, NC.  Two granddaughters, Susan Padgett Ranspach and Donna Lorence, both of   Hampton,VA. DOROTHY GRIGGINRoanoke Rapids, NC - Mrs. Dorothy “Dot” Jenkins Griffin, age 70, of Roanoke Rapids died Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at her home.
     Mrs. Griffin was born August 6, 1938 in Halifax County, NC, the daughter of the late John Henry Jenkins and Nellie Mabrey Jenkins.  She was also predeceased by a son, Billy Green.
     Dot was a faithful member of Harvest Temple Holiness Church in Roanoke Rapids. She was a flower designer and owner of Elegant Designs in Roanoke Rapids for many years.  She had served as a member of the Roanoke Rapids Police Auxiliary and the Roanoke Valley Rescue Squad Auxiliary. 
     Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Harold Griffin.  Her sons, Randy Griffin and his wife Kathy and Darryl Griffin and his wife Leila, all of Roanoke Rapids.  Her sisters, Charlotte Rodwell and her husband J.B and Ann Allsbrook and her husband Buzzy, all of Roanoke Rapids.  Her brothers, James Jenkins and his wife Hilda and Wayne Jenkins and his wife Sylvia, all of Roanoke Rapids. Halifax, NC - Mr. Joseph Lee Parrish age 65, of Aurelian Springs Road, Halifax, NC died Friday, May 29, 2009 at Carrol S. Roberson Hospice Center in Fayetteville, NC.
     Mr. Parrish was born July 28, 1943 in Halifax County, NC, the son of the late Frank B. Parrish and Helen Harrison Parrish.  He was also preceded in death by his step father W.J. Hobbs.  He was a plasterer and sheet rock hanger for many years. He loved music  and played the guitar. He was a member of Liberty Pentecostal Holiness Church.
     Survivors include his wife, Joyce Barkley Parrish.  His daughter Donna Parrish Tractor of Texarkana, Arkansas. Two step-sons, Olya T. Green and his wife Marie and Thomas Green and his wife Stephanie all of Roanoke Rapids.  His brothers, Freddie Parrish of Roanoke Rapids and Sherman Parrish and his wife Joan of Shelby, NC.  His grandson, Philip Tractor. Gaston, NC - Mr. John Charles “Charlie” Werner, age 69, of Gaston, NC died Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
     Mr. Werner was born March 31, 1940 in Lancaster, PA the son of the late Raymond Werner and Sylvia Pierce Werner.  He was a retired truck driver and a member of Valley Community Church.
     Survivors include his wife, Carol Adams Werner.  His son, Brent Werner and his wife Debra of Lancaster, PA.  His daughters, Tracy Roseberry and her husband William of Denver, PA and Kerri Cassel and her husband Jeffory of Wernersville, PA. CLYDE JOHNSONConway, NC - Mr. Clyde Fenton “Pill” Johnson, age 92, of Conway, NC died Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin, VA.
    Mr. Johnson was born October 17, 1916, the son of the late Henry Johnson and Bessie Pope Johnson.  He was also preceded in death by his wife, Nannie Wood Britton Johnson and a sister, Mittie Johnson Barnes.  He was retired from the North Carolina Dept. of Corrections.  He was a Mason and a member of the Pendleton Masonic Lodge.
    Survivors include his son, Woody Johnson and his wife Sandra of Conway, NC.  His sister, Hazel Johnson Pope of Boykins, VA and Margie Johnson Burgess of Roanoke Rapids, NC.  His grandchildren, Chris Johnson and his wife Jennifer of Severn, NC and Hollie Wells and her husband Michael of Roanoke Rapids. One great granddaughter, Lauren Kate Johnson.  Also many nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services will be held, Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Galatia Baptist Church with Rev. David Foster officiating.  Burial will follow at the Johnson Family Cemetery.

MARY DAVISConway, NC - Mrs. Mary Boone Lanier Davis age 83, of Conway, NC died Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, NC.
    Mrs. Davis was born September 10, 1925, in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late John Edward Boone and Lizzie Hasty Boone.  She was also preceded in death by her first husband, J.B Lanier and her second husband John G. Davis and her brother-in-law, J.R. Duke.   She was a member of Jackson Baptist Church and a farmer.
    Survivors include her sisters, Nell Boone Duke and DeRother Boone Tromans and her husband John, all of Jackson, NC. Her step-daughter, Susan Davis Pope and her husband Thomas of Conway.  Her step son, John M. Davis and his wife Peggy of Raleigh, NC.  Her grandchildren, Jenny Disney, Beth Vinson, John Pope and James Pope. Her niece, Nell Dean Williams and her husband Kenneth. Her nephews, Michael Tromans and his wife Rita and Jimmy Duke. 
    Funeral services will be held, Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Jackson Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Johnson officiating.  Burial will follow at Jackson Cemetery.

ROANOKE RAPIDS, NC – Mrs. Stella Ruby Green Ferguson, age 84, died Sunday, May17, 2009, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
     Mrs. Ferguson was born in Bertie County, May 11, 1925, the daughter of the late Joseph Elijah and Ruby Hall Green.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Kennon Wyatt Ferguson; a son, Benjamin Lee Dixon, a sister, Josephine Parks and a brother, J. C. Green. 
     She is survived by her daughter, Ruby Dixon Van Dyke of Henrico, two sons, Carlton Ray Tripp, Jr. and Joseph Tripp both of Roanoke Rapids, a sister Pattie Mae Johnston of Roanoke Rapids, two brothers, James William Green of Roanoke Rapids, and Edmond Donald Lassiter of Monroe, N.C., special sister in law, Juanita Green of Roanoke Rapids, grandchildren, Carlton Ray Tripp III and wife Amy, Benjamin Tripp, Julie Stanley, Alan Tripp, Kennon Van Dyke, Matney Van Dyke, Jr., Cheryl Lee and Jody Tripp,
18 great grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mrs. Rosanna Rich Froeba, age 75 of Roanoke Rapids, NC died Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
     Mrs. Froeba was born March 13, 1934 in New Britain, Conn., the daughter of the late Augustus Edward Rich and Barbara Harris Morse.
     Survivors include her husband George Froeba.  Her son, George E. Froeba and his friend Norma Clemons of Halifax.  Two grandchildren, Corena Bristow and Tanya Froeba of Greenville, NC.

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mr. David Moses Richards Sr., age 49, of Roanoke Rapids died Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount, NC.
     Mr. Richards was born September 3, 1959 in Allegany County, PA.  He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas William Richards Sr.  He was a used car dealer in Roanoke Rapids.
     Survivors include his wife, Edith Ann Burns Richards.  His son, David M. Richards Jr. and his daughter, Amanda Marie Richards, both of Roanoke Rapids.  His mother, Victoria LaVerne Richards of Belle Vernon, PA.  His twin sister, Diane Richards Oswalt of Punxsutawney, PA.  Two brothers, Robert William Richards of Greensburg, PA and Thomas William Richards of PA. Four grandchildren, Austin Shane Peterson, Hailey Marie Richards, Christopher Matthew Richards and Katherine Alyssa Richards.  Also many nieces and nephews.
     A graveside service will be held, Thursday, May 14, 2009 at 10:30 AM at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Father Michael Butler officiating.

Emporia, VA - Mr. Thomas Ballard Carlisle, age 82, died Thursday, May 7, 2009 at Emporia Manor in Emporia, VA.
     Mr. Carlisle was born October 7, 1927, in Halifax County, NC the son of the late Ferdinand Carlisle and Gattie Mae Butts Carlisle. 
He was also predeceased by his brothers, James Carlisle, Sterling Carlisle, Ollie Carlisle, Willard Carlisle and his sisters, Nellie C. Shaw and Floyd Lee Brewer. He was a retired mechanic and worked for Farm City in Roanoke Rapids for a number of years.  He was a World War II Army veteran.
     Survivors include his wife, Marion Cannon Carlisle.  Also many nieces and nephews. 
     A graveside service will be held, Monday, May 11, 2009 at 1:00 PM at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Troy Greene officiating.

WILLIAM FUTRELLJackson, NC - Mr. William Thomas “Billy” Futrell, age 77, of Hwy 305, Jackson, NC died Sunday, May 3, 2009 at his home.
    Mr. Futrell was born April 16, 1932 in Northampton county, the son of the late William Roger Futrell and Josie Askew Futrell.  He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Daphne Futrell, Judith Ruth Barnes, Peggy Ann Futrell, a sister-in-law, Ethel Futrell and a brother-in-law Oscar Barnes. He was retired from the NC Dept. of Transportation and a faithful member of Rohoboth United Methodist Church.
    Survivors include his wife, Ruby Duke Futrell.  His daughter, Dawn Leseney and her husband Roger of Jackson.  His brothers, Henry Patrick Futrell, Roger Buxton “Buck” Futrell and his wife Gladys, Robert Earl “Bobby” Futrell and his wife Peggy, and Bernie Darrell Futrell and his wife Kay.  Four grandchildren, Timothy Joseph Bellanca and his wife Elisa, Lauren Hope Bellanca, William David Bellanca and Tyr’e Samuel Leseney.One great grandchild, Kristopher Matthew Altmansberger.
    Funeral services will be held, Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Rehoboth United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Rogers officiating.  Burial will follow at the Futrell Family Cemetery.

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mrs. Geraldine Mason Bradley, age 89, of Roanoke Rapids, NC died April 28, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
     Mrs. Bradley was born October 18, 1919 in Hyde County, NC, the daughter of the late Darius H. Mason and Lola Banks Mason.  She was also preceded in death by her husband William Turner Bradley and a baby sister Delores Mason.
     Survivors include her daughter, Sybil Deanne Bradley Sphar and her husband Joe of Corrales, NM.  Her son William “Brad” Bradley of Kitty Hawk, NC.  Her sister, Essie Wayne Silverman and her husband Bill of Orlando, Florida.  Her grandchildren, Susan Cooke, Tara Bradley, Stephanie Bradley, Beth Bradley and Alice Bradley. Her great grandchildren, Hayes Chambers, Samantha Wagoner, Clay Cardwell, Nikolas McCelvey and William McCelvey.  One great great grandchild, Bradley Cardwell.
     A memorial service will be held, Saturday, May 9, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Jackson United Methodist Church in Jackson, NC withRev. Paul Lee officiating.

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mrs. Faye Teele Smith Seger, age 77, formerly of Roanoke Rapids died Monday, April 27, 2009 in Wilson, NC.
     Mrs. Seger was born June 23, 1931, in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Rufus Elmer Smith and Ossie Hazel Teele Smith Council.  She was also predeceased by her husband, Rev. Melvin Leon Seger.
      Survivors include her sister, Marjorie Smith Almony of York, Penn.
    Graveside services will be held, Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 10:00 AM at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Julian Mills officiating.

ROANOKE RAPIDS, NC – Mrs. Frances Elizabeth Davis Liverman Daughtry, age 88, formerly of Lasker, NC and most recently, a resident of Magnolia Gardens Senior Care, in Roanoke Rapids, died Sunday, April 19, 2009, at her home.
     Mrs. Daughtry was born May 12, 1920, the daughter of the late Macon Edward Davis and Lottie Flythe Davis.  She was preceded in death by her first husband, Arthur Lee Liverman; her second husband, Luther Sherwood Daughtry; and her step-son, Luther Joyner Daughtry. She was a member of Lasker Baptist Church.
     She is survived by her son, Fred Lee Liverman and his wife Sue, of Ahoskie, NC; two step-daughters, Ann Hicks and her husband,Larry of El Paso, TX, and Gloria Payne and her husband Claude, of Maryville, TN; and two sisters, Martha Davis Warren of Rich Square, NC and Peggy Davis Ferguson, of Newsoms, VA.
     She had eleven grandchildren including Sheila Liverman Forbes and her husband Stewart of Sanford, NC, Edward Lee Liverman and his wife Julie, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, John Andrew Liverman and his wife Kari, of Richmond, VA, Melissa Mercado and her husband Ernest, Jill Clark and her husband Chris, Jennifer Finch and her husband Paul, Shawn Borounda and her husband Carlos, Trent Hicks and his wife Amy, Greg Lane, Lizzie Slutzky and her husband Steve, and Matthew Lane and his wife Rebecca.
     Her great grandchildren included Carter, Kirby Elizabeth, and Keaton Forbes; Bennett and Davis Liverman; Kaylee, Elly, and Ruby Liverman; Garrett and Will Boyette; Mason Mercado; Annissa and Abigail Clark; Ayden Finch; Hunter Hicks; Ethan and Erin Slutzky; and Jeremy and James Lane. Her special caregivers at Magnolia Gardens were April, Barbara, Bonita, Ellen, Kim, Tamica, Nikki, and Christina.
     Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 23, 2009 at 3:00 PM at Lasker Baptist Church in Lasker with Rev. Rick Barnes and
Father Jeff Douglas officiating.  Burial will follow at the Ahoskie Cemetery in Ahoskie.

CHARLIE JOHNSONMilwaukee, NC - Mr. Charlie Lee Johnson, age 89 of Milwaukee, NC died Sunday, April 19, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
    Mr. Johnson was born, Feb. 12, 1920 in Milwaukee, the son of the late Charlie Johnson and Lottie Davis Johnson.  He was also preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Cornelias Lassiter Johnson who preceded him in death in 2001.  He was also preceded in death by his three brothers, Horace Johnson. Wayland Johnson and Andrew Johnson and three sisters, Elsie Johnson Francis, Willie Grey Johnson Vinson and Pearl Johnson Flythe.
    He was a proud World War II Army veteran and served in Germany during World War II.  He was retired from the NC State Highway Dept. and a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.
    He is survived by his children, Tommy Lee Johnson and his wife Eva of Milwaukee and Virginia Rae Johnson McFall and her husband Don of Bridgewater, VA.  Five grandchildren, Angela Johnson Taylor, Lee Johnson, Michele McFall Sheffer, Melissa McFall Fox and Melinda McFall Berkshire.  Eight great grandchildren, Maci, Hudson, Chase, Sydney, Maddie, Trey, Gabby and Jack.

Roanoke Rapids, NC- Mrs. Patricia Dickens Abshire, age 71, of Thomas Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC died Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount, NC.
     Mrs. Abshire was born January 5, 1938 in Halifax County, NC, the daughter of the late Leslie David “L.D.” Dickens and Lydia Daniels Dickens.  She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Roanoke Rapids.
     Survivors include her husband, Don G. Abshire.  Her children, Chubby Abshire of Greenville, SC, Kip Abshire and Les Abshire, both of Wake Forest, NC and Donna Inscoe of Littleton, NC.  Her sisters, Joyce Dickens of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Betty Bishop of Pineville, Louisiana, and Judy Stanley of Roanoke Rapids .  Her brothers, David Dickens of Roanoke Rapids and Frank Dickens of New Bern, NC.  Her grandchildren, Kameron Abshire, Kyle Abshire, Kristopher Abshire, Koy Dillard, Kari Abshire, Joshua Abshire, Claire Abshire, Cole Abshire, Mari Lydia Abshire, and Justin Inscoe.
     A memorial service will be held Friday, April 3, 2009 at 12:00 Noon at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Margaret Horrell officiating.

    Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mr. Terry Lee Stauffer Jr., age 40, of Roanoke Rapids, NC died Tuesday, March 31, 2009.
    Survivors include his wife, Lisa Edwards Stauffer; his sons, Terry Lee Stauffer III and Jacob Stauffer, both of the home; his mother, Ruth Spring and her husband, Michael, of Crestwell, NC; his mother-in-law, Jean Edwards of Roanoke Rapids; his brother, Tim Stauffer and his wife, Crystal, of Seaboard, NC; his sisters, Heidi Stauffer Bridgers and her husband, Win, of Ahoskie, NC and Wendy Stauffer Spradlin of Milwaukee, NC; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services will be held, Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 11 a.m. at New Testament Christian Church in Roanoke Rapids with Minister Dale Morris officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

    Richmond, VA - Helen Taylor Kagels, 96, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009. She was a native of Northampton County and served in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II.
    Survivors include a daughter, Alice K. Campbell of Richmond, VA; a son, Thomas E. Kagels of Powhatan, VA; a sister, Annie Taylor Bass of Seaboard; two grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
    Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 4 at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, Seaboard, with the Rev. Robert Hill and the Rev. Lee Taylor officiating.

Ahoskie, NC- Mr. Edward Kyle Brantley, Sr., age 82, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.
    Mr. Brantley was born, Oct. 29, 1926, the son of the late Lee Brantley and Clara Harrell Brantley. He was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He worked for Lipton Tea Company from 1955 until 1986. He loved gardening, most especially growing tomatoes and grapes.
    Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Jernigan Brantley. His son, Edward Kyle Brantley and his wife Carol of Warrenton, VA. His daughter, Joy Taylor of Colerain, NC. Two sisters, Clara Lee Davidson and Emily Hall. His grandchildren, Eva Godwin, Cary Bowes, Shannon Zagersky and James Edward Taylor. His great grandchildren, Jacob and Megan Bowes, Stan Godwin, Ivan and Levy Zakersky, Allison and Brook Taylor.
    Graveside services will be held, Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Highland Memorial Gardens with Rev. Tommy Kiker officiating.

Weldon, NC - Mrs. Angelia Frost DeLozier, age 96, died Tuesday March 10, 2009 at Liberty Commons, in Weldon . 
     Mrs. DeLozier was born August 17, 1912 in Oakland, Maine, the daughter of the late Winfield Frost and Mary Willett Frost.  She was also predeceased by her husband, Russell Garr DeLozier and a grandson, Rob Langley.  She was a member of Hillcrest Jehovah Witness Church.
     Survivors include her daughters, Sylvia M. Langley and her husband Grady of Roanoke Rapids and Diana Pope and her husband Jerry of Fayetteville, NC.  Her grandchildren, Nancy Rusk of Haversville, Maryland, Larry Langley and his wife Dayna of Roanoke Rapids, Sherrie Ellis and her husband Jimmy of Hope Mills, NC and Kelly Pope of Brookline, Mass.  A former daughter-in-law, Pamela Langley Driver. Her great grandchildren, Aaron Langley, Josh Langley, Samuel Langley, David Langley, Michael Pope, Jessica Pierce and her husband Justin.  Her great great grandchild, Jacob Pierce.

Garysburg, NC - Mrs. Amanda Eloise Stephenson, age 84, of Garysburg, NC died March 7, 2009 at Bedford Memorial Hospital in Bedford, Virginia.
     Mrs. Stephenson was born April 5, 1924 in Batesburg, SC, the daughter of the late John and Dollier Keisler.  She was also preceded in death by her husband Quinton Judson “QJ” Stephenson and two brothers, Theron Keisler and J.B. “Bo” Keisler, both of South Carolina.
     Mrs. Stephenson was a member of Garysburg Methodist Church and retired as a seamstress from Fannie’s in Roanoke Rapids.
     She leaves to cherish her memory four children, Dollie Glaum of Raleigh, NC,  Quinton Stephenson and his wife Sherry of Oxford, NC, Eula Cutler of Roanoke Rapids and Jackie Heffelfinger and her husband Mike of Bedford, VA.  Two sisters, Georgia Bailey of Florida and Lorene Gantt of South Carolina.  Ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren.  Also many niece and nephews.
     Funeral services will be held, Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Garysburg Methodist Church.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pleasant Hill, NC - Mr. Arthur Wayne Edwards, age 66, of Pleasant Hill, NC died Thursday, March 5, 2009 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC.
   Mr. Edwards was born July 11, 1942 in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late Richard Mark Edwards and Hazel Faucette Edwards.  He was also predeceased  by his son, Chris Edwards and a brother, Frank Edwards.  He was employed with Moore’s In Roanoke Rapids for thirty three years before his retirement.
     Survivors include his son, Tyree Wayne Edwards of Rocky Mount, NC.  His companion, Gail Baird.  His sister, Margaret Daughtry and her husband Vernon of Halifax, NC and Marie Harris and her husband Sonny of Weldon, NC.  His brother, Hubert Earl Edwards and his wife  Barbara Jean of Halifax, NC.  His grandchildren DeAnne Lopez, Joshua Edwards, Tabitha Supernaugh, Jeremy Hardwick, Jarred Edwards, Baylee Edwards and Hannah Baird.  Nine great grandchildren.
     Graveside services will be held, Monday, March 9, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Jackson Cemetery in Jackson, NC with Rev. Jim Bell officiating.
